Join me for Dia de los Muertos at La Villita's 'Muertos Fest'

Dia de los Muertos is here!!  Celebrating Day of the Dead is my most favorite 'festive celebration'...ever!!  Throughout San Antonio you can find mini shrines and alters dedicated to loved ones who have passed.  If you drive by cemeteries, you can see families having picnics or reunions on the gravesite of a loved one.  The scent of marigolds is heavy in the air during Dia de los Muertos.  Seeing people dressed as 'calacas' or 'catrinas' at Starbucks or the grocery store is very common.  In San Antonio, this is the second favorite celebration with Fiesta (during April) being the first.

Super-Breif history...

The tradition of Dia de los Muertos originates in Latin America.  Assured that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties, and activities the dead enjoyed in life.  The celebration recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community.  On Dia de los Muertos, the dead who are still considered part of the community, awakened from their eternal sleep to share celebrations with their loved ones.

That's where the awesome celebrations take place!!  I will be spending my Dia de los Muertos at the 'Muertos Fest' at La Villita.  This two day celebration includes live music, original Day of the Dead Art (that's where I come in...I'm a vendor inside Maverick Plaza), living altar, dance, drum and puppet procession (<---the BEST PART of the whole celebration), live poetry and more!

This celebration of life is a must-see event!!  It's free and open to the public.  Saturday's fun begins at 10:00am and continues through 11:00pm.  For more information click on the image for schedule of events.

I'll have more pics during the week!
